Parade Column: A Room of My Own + THE WEDDING VEIL Launch Party!

Good morning, friends! I am actually sitting in my very nearly completed new office/library as I type this, trying to get a feel for the finishing touches. And, as we wrap up this process, I can’t help but think of my very first office space–and what it meant to me. I wrote a fun column this week for Parade about having a room of my own. Here’s a sneak peek of the first couple paragraphs. And head over to our Parade Friends & Fiction Column link to read the rest!

A Sneak Peek:

My career as an author began on the floor of my closet. Auspicious, I know. I still can’t say exactly why, when I was up feeding my newborn baby in the middle of the night, scrawling longhand into a notebook, the closet floor was the spot I chose. But it was still the early days of motherhood, where our son’s crib was tucked inside our bedroom, and something about leaving our nest in the dark felt like breaking a sacred seal.

During those closet-writing months, my husband, son, and I lived in a 1930s brick home with architectural details that had me from hello and an extra room or two that easily could have become a writing space. As I continued working on that manuscript—sometimes even in the light of day—I took to writing in one of the only spaces in the house we hadn’t lovingly updated: our laundry room. The walls and ceilings were painted pea green with coordinating scratchy indoor/outdoor carpet. It was dark and wholly uninspiring, but, even still, I perched an old desk we had in storage underneath a slanted wall where I could almost sit up straight without my head hitting the ceiling.
