Writing columns is one of my love languages, and I was overjoyed to have the chance to put together a piece for Southern Living. I was supposed to write about my house and how it inspired my new novel, Summer State of Mind. But somehow… this became something different, probably one of the most personal things I’ve ever written from a time in my life I’m not sure I’d ever really processed.
Journalism is what made me fall in love with writing. I had my first internship at my local newspaper my senior year of high school and, not only did I get the opportunity to tell other people’s stories, I also got my own column, a chance to say absolutely anything I wanted each week. It’s how I found my voice as a writer, and I think a piece of that seventeen-year-old girl and her first summer internship is inside every novel, every column, every article I ever write.
