Lou Diamond Phillips, My Favorite Cake, First Days of School + More!

Good morning, friends! I hope your week is off to a wonderful start! I just dropped my son off for his first day of FOURTH GRADE, and I can’t believe it. I feel like I dropped him off at 2-year-old preschool a minute ago, and now he’s so grown up. And, well, he needs a haircut. He doesn’t think so, of course, but he does.

At any rate, the first day of school is always bittersweet–and a HUGE celebration. I can’t wait for him to get home so I can hear all about it, and so we can celebrate! I literally always have a Caroline’s Caramel Cake in my freezer for occasions like this. Did you know you can actually thaw them, eat part and then refreeze? It’s kind of amazing. My husband and my son are both giant caramel cake fans, and they think Caroline’s is the best in the world. (Well, okay: My grandmother’s is the best in the world. But maybe they’re tied!)

We are partnering with Caroline’s Cakes on Friends & Fiction this summer, which is just too much fun! They sent some of my favorite s’more cake bites, but, let’s just say, they didn’t make it through the night. Which is embarrassing because I think there are like a dozen of them in the package. They are my absolute go-to gift for people, and it’s amazing how great they are straight out of the freezer for people who can’t wait a few minutes for them to thaw… Wonder who that could be… Anyway, Caroline’s asked us about some of our favorite books of summer and one of mine was Malibu Rising! Did you see our episode with Taylor Jenkins Reid last week? Wow, was she AMAZING!

You can watch the full episode on YouTube, or, if you don’t have time, watch little “bites” on our brand new Friends & Fiction blog!

This Week on Friends & Fiction

Tonight’s episode is all about debut authors! We will welcome four first-time novelists—all with new or recent books out—to the show and discuss their journey to publication. Meet acclaimed actor Lou Diamond Phillips (Young Guns, La Bamba, Prodigal Son) as we hear all about his debut YA science fiction fantasy novel TINDERBOX (released 8/3 by Blackstone), inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s famous fairy tale of the same name. We will also welcome Gervais Hagerty (In Polite Company, out this week from William Morrow), Addison Armstrong (The Light of Luna Park, released 8/10 by Penguin), and Paige Crutcher (The Orphan Witch, coming 9/28 from @St. Martin’s Press). Join us on Wed 8/18 at 7pm ET via Facebook Live on the F&F group page or on our YouTube channel. See you then!

Lucky us! This week we have a special Sunday Bonus episode. Join us this Sunday August 22nd as we welcome the writing instructor, essayist and prize-winning author of seven books, including this year’s A Boob’s Life (which is in development for HBO Max by producer Salma Hayek), Leslie Lehr. Joining Leslie is her husband—screenwriting guru, director, highly sought-after writing consultant, and The Anatomy of Story author John Truby. Mark your calendars for Sun 8/22 at 5pm ET and tune in for our chat with John & Leslie!

Can’t wait to see you there tonight & Sunday!
