This is my lucky gas station. I know what you’re thinking: I wish I had a lucky gas station. Okay… No… You probably aren’t thinking that. But would you like to know WHY this is my lucky gas station? It’s a pretty good story I think, and it involves the near-dissolution of my writing career. (P.S. I know my eyes are closed, but this is my only picture on this hallowed ground, so we’re going to have to go with it!)
In 2016, right before LIES AND OTHER ACTS OF LOVE released, I found out I wasn’t getting another book deal. I was 100% sure my career was over. And, worse yet, I had to go out for three weeks on the road and smile and be cagey when people asked, “What’s coming next?!” I couldn’t say, “NOTHING BECAUSE MY CAREER IS OVER!”
Anyway, the book that didn’t get picked up was calling FEELS LIKE FALLING. The good news is that we went out on submission for that book and my knightess in shining armor editor at Gallery Books loved it! But…
She emailed me to tell me she thought the next best step for my career was to write a series. So, I was on book tour at the time, in full-on, eighteen-hour-a-day talk-sign-travel mode. So I certainly didn’t have time to come up with an idea for a series! I planned to tell her that. Only… when she called… Well… this idea about a mother whose three grown daughters come back home to live with her just as a man from her past comes back just flew out of me!
I thought I had blown it. Truly. Until three days later when I was at this gas station. And my agent called to say he didn’t know what I said on that phone call, but I had an offer for what would become the Peachtree Bluff Series.
