Finally, a Sixpense in My Shoe!

Well, friends, this is officially then end of my wedding post series, which can only mean one thing: today is the last day of THE WEDDING VEIL’s launch week! It has been fabulous and tremendous in every way thanks to all of YOU, who have taken on the role of sharing and loving on this book as if it were your very own. There are no words to thank you! And if you still haven’t received your copy, I’ll be at Quail Ridge Books today, where they are happy to take your personalization requests or send a signed book your way!

I’ll be honest: the phrase “sixpence in your shoe” was something I’d heard bandied about. But I didn’t really know what a sixpence was. My Aunt Cathy is sort of the keeper of all knowledge in our family and, fortunately, not only did she know what the sixpence was—a British coin first minted in 1551 and kept in circulation until 1980—but I certainly didn’t know how to get one. Aunt Cathy went to great lengths to procure one for me and the night before the wedding… we lost it. Even my banker grandfather who had a huge collection of rare coins didn’t have one.

This might shock you but… I was a pretty laid-back bride. I wasn’t all that worried about any of the details of the wedding itself, just the marriage part. But after all the hard work Cathy had gone to to find that sixpence, I was going to have it! We looked and looked and finally had to face facts: we had lost it.

As I got ready to walk down the aisle, I slipped on my shoes and felt something strange… My sixpence! We still can’t figure out how it reappeared, but all’s well that ends well. And maybe that sixpence was good luck because, fourteen years later, I’d marry that same man all over again!

How do you feel about the sixpence? Nice tradition or overrated?
