It must be because the weekend was so incredibly beautiful and the weather is just perfect right now, but my weekend was all about nature — even when I was indoors! I flew through Beth Hoffman’s amazing Looking for Me, which is mainly set on a Kentucky farm and the vast wilderness that surrounds it. The protagonist Teddi’s brother Josh disappears into that wilderness setting the stage for one of the story’s main conflicts, and the thing that kept my fingers flipping and flipping through the pages. Teddi’s entire family has a real soft spot for animals, for saving and rehabilitating them, for protecting nature and all its creatures from those who want to destroy it. But none takes this role as seriously as Josh, whose disappearance is closely tied to his deep understanding of and relationship with the natural world he is attempting to protect.
I was astounded by the detail of this story, the knowledge that Hoffman infuses into these pages about the wildlife and landscape of Kentucky. I feel like I’ve been to the gorge and the Natural Bridge. Nature is undoubtedly one of this story’s characters — and a very rich and well-developed one at that.
In addition to these pages, I also watched this really cool documentary, The Sacred Science. It is about the Amazon rainforest and a group of very ill people who venture into it to counteract serious chronic illnesses, many of which conventional medicine has been unable to treat. If you’re interested in natural health or the Amazon and all the treasures there in, this is a documentary you’ll want to check out. And the free screening is available for a couple more days!
And, right in our little corner of coastal North Carolina, the great outdoors were too lovely to miss a moment of. Clear water, blue skies, warm temperatures and cool breezes… It doesn’t get any better. It was such a wonderful reminder of how amazing our world is! Wherever you are today, I hope the weather is just as beautiful!
