Halloween Candy!

I am a little sick to my stomach right now as I’m writing this. And not because I have that horrific flu going around, thank goodness! But because I succumbed to the lure of the “250 pieces for $10” bag of chocolate. For Halloween, obviously. For the Trick-or-Treaters, of course. Because I, a reasonable adult fully aware of her vices and patterns, somehow convinced myself that I could have 250 pieces of Hershey’s finest sitting in my pantry for a week and not eat any of it. Please. That bag’s seal didn’t make it out of the parking lot. (Although, that it made it out of the store shows serious progress.)

I blame my mother. Why not? You can actually find a way to blame your mother for everything. Although, in this case, she really did do her best. You know how they say your baby’s favorite foods are the ones they taste the most in utero? Well, my chocoholic mother didn’t eat one piece of candy that entire nine months in order to save me a life full of chocolate addiction. And guess what? It didn’t do one bit of good. I love it anyway.

I’m glad I was the science experiment, though. It saved me nine long, painful, chocolate-free months. And, ironically, little Will thinks chocolate is fine, but not anything all that special. (Do you wish you could have a do-over, Mom? On the bright side, think of all that weight you didn’t gain!)

I’m documenting this over-sugared feeling as a cautionary tale for myself. And it will work pretty well. I probably won’t gorge myself on chocolate again… Until it’s time to make fudge for the neighbors for Christmas. I HAVE to make them fudge. I couldn’t possibly buy them a pretty candle or those cute tins of cookies or those adorable make-your-own hot chocolate kits in the mason jars on Pinterest. It has to be fudge. And I have to taste a few bites at every stage. It’s simple quality control.

Unless you want to be like me and make your spouse hide the candy from you when he gets home, here’s my advice: Don’t buy your Halloween candy until Halloween! (Or, well, that seems kind of harsh… Maybe just buy a smaller bag!)

I hope you are all having a fabulous (chocolate-filled!) week!

  • Hahaha! Another thing we have in common Kristy, I too am a chocoholic!!!! And luckily I didn’t do what your mom did with Sophia, I was able to eat my fill of chocolates to my hearts content during my pregnancy and hopefully, like my oldest son, she won’t love chocolates as much I or my little son does! Anyway, it’s Halloween, what else can we adults indulge in other than dressing up like kids and eating all the candy we could muster, especially the ones right out of our kids bags! have a great Halloween!

  • Fun post! Interesting theory about watching what you eat while expecting in order to prevent your baby from having an addiction to it.
    I love chocolate.
I am very proud of the fact that for the past year I have a bag of Hersey’s Dark Chocolate Bliss candies in my pantry at all times!. I restrict myself to one after our dinner! Then later in the evening, instead of pigging out on something full of calories, I treat myself to another one! I checked the packaging and a serving (3 pieces) has approx. 120 calories! Not bad. BEST PART….DARK CHOCOLATE IS GOOD FOR YOU!!!

    • That is amazing Patty! I keep thinking that if I just keep it around all the time I’ll eventually stop eating it… Doesn’t seem to be working!

  • Ha,ha,ha. Guilty as charged. In fact, we used to buy candy we liked [loved] so that if there was any left we would enjoy it, it wouldn’t got to waste. Problem was that we would buy it no later than the second Monday in October and invariably it was nearly gone by October 23rd. 🙂 It’s those darn tiny, bite-sized pieces that make us think we can have 2 or 10 pieces and it won’t be the same as eating a full sized candy bar! 🙂
Strap on your fitbit and start an exercise program this weekend.
    xo,
    Karen

    • Glad someone else does this, Karen! It’s like Halloween is a free pass for candy eating….
